I was playing with the lathe today, working on faceplate turning. Above are two small (~3") bowls I made from some old oak firewood that's been hanging around the garage for several years.

I need to sharpen my roughing gouges before I do more, and, perhaps, think about getting a bowl gouge.

The irregular edges are due to the fact that, being from firewood splits, I could either make them much smaller, or leave the weird edges that were there in order to make a larger bowl. Both of them were done by screwing a piece of oak to the face plate and then working at them with a roughing gouge and a scraper until they looked bowl-shaped. Both are finished with tung oil.

Those are great early tries. The force is strong in you.

I need to look under the workbench and see if I can find any larger pieces of wood. Or, maybe, run up to Ron & Bobbie's and cut some.

I may also try the dish soap trick with a chunk of apple and see how that comes out.
