nws storm prediction center norman ok
1134 am cdt mon aug 13 2007
...damaging wind episode expected over parts of the upper mississippi valley and midwest this afternoon and tonight...
the nws storm prediction center in norman ok is forecasting the development of large hail...a few tornadoes and potentially widespread damaging winds over parts of the upper mississippi valley and midwest this afternoon and tonight.
the areas most likely to experience this activity include
north-central and northeastern iowa
western and southern minnesota
western wisconsin
surrounding the moderate risk area...there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms from the upper mississippi valley and portions of the upper great lakes into the midwest.
a hot and moist air mass is forecast to develop today along a warm front which will be slowly lifting north through the eastern dakotas and ia. severe thunderstorms have already developed near this front over eastern north dakota in response to the approach of an upper-air disturbance from the west. these storms are likely to continue today...gradually increasing in both coverage and intensity as they move southeast along this frontal zone through parts of minnesota...perhaps western wisconsin...and eventually ia tonight.
the expected moderate to strong instability coupled with moderately strong vertical wind shear indicate the potential for both supercells and bow echoes with a threat of large hail...a few tornadoes and possibly widespread damaging winds.
those in the threatened area are urged to review severe weather safety rules and to listen to radio...television...and noaa weather radio for possible watches...warnings...and statements later today.
