Bathroom upgrades
Aug. 13th, 2008 10:03 pmI put up the grab bars today. Neither one was as easy as it should have been, but I blame that on my house.
One went next to the tub surround, and I had to move it over slightly because there's a partial stud that was in the way of the bottom hole (I checked for studs, but checked just above the top of the stud). The grab bar is mounted just to the drywall, but Moen says that the SecureMount Anchors are good for 300lb loads on drywall or fiberglass.
The other bar is running diagonally across the back of the tub surround. There's a full drywall wall behind the surround, which meant that I had to remove some of it (through the 1.25" installation hole for the anchors) in order to get the toggles into place. Then I had to hold them in place without being able to use the normal installation brackets until I could attach the anchor plates to them. After that it was just a matter of rotating the anchor plates until the screw holes lined up with the screw holes on the grab bars and tightening everything up.
