We took the cats out for a walk today.

Jackie goes out onto the step and rolls around on the concrete for a while. She might explore the driveway or out into the yard, but when she gets scared, or gets tired of outside she heads back to the door and asks to be let back in.

Marlie goes exploring. Today she wasn't sure if she wanted to go out, but when Jackie came out to, she started looking around off the step, and eventually went around into the side yard by the bird feeders. After a while of wandering around our yard and the neighbors, one of the local dogs (somewhere in the distance) started barking, and she took off around the house for the door. She did this fast enough to pull the leash out of my hand, and drag it around the corner where it caught on the siding. This apparently) pulled her up short hard enough that she reversed course and came tearing back around, by which time I'd caught the leash reel and could slow her down enough to catch her. She was completely bushy at this point, and really didn't want to be picked up. We got her inside, but before we could get her harness off, she made a beeline for under the bed, trailing the leash behind her. Fortunately, she's a sucker for treats, so we lured her to the edge, unhooked the harness, and then left her there to sort herself out.

I didn't really help things after that when I came through with the vacuum to clean up the mud from my boots, and probably will freak any of the cats who are still under the bed when I come back with the rug cleaner.

In other news, I bought a Bissell Spot Lifter yesterday. I had stopped in at the hardware store for a refill of the leak checker stuff, and discovered that they were having a one-day-only coupon for 50% off any regularly priced item under $50. That made it only $22.50, instead of $44.95, and since I had been looking at them, because we have white carpets, I bought it.

Now I'm keeping an eye on the bird feeders. I went to fill them today, and the squirrels have chewed a hole through one of them. We're now watching to see how they get onto the feeders so that we can figure out how to slow them down. I started by greasing the pole, and we may also move it farther from the apple tree and the house.
