Many years ago, there was an accident in one of the labs.

One of the grad students was using the rolling mill to reduce the thickness of some steel plate and got his fingers caught in the machine. This resulted in (from what everyone remembers) the loss of 3-4 fingers. There was, also, a piece of steel plate that supposedly had a partial hand print permanently rolled into it. Everyone who's been around for a while has heard the story, several were there that day and can confirm the details, but no one will admit to actually seeing the plate.

Last week in the undergrad lab, the guy who runs the lab where the rolling mill is currently was using the story to explain why you shouldn't wear gloves when using the machine, and the students didn't believe the hand print part.

This week (tomorrow and Wednesday), we're going to load a vinyl lab glove with chicken wings (they decided that that would be closest to fingers) and put that inside a leather work glove (we hope the vinyl glove will contain the mess), set it on top of a piece of 1/8" mild steel, and send it through the machine to see what happens.

I'll take pics of the whole event, and if any of them show the "hand print", I'll post a few.
