(no subject)

I came in this morning to find my computer locked up and BSOD'd.

A half dozen reboots later, I got it into diagnostic mode and started running tests. Two hours of diagnostics later, I called dell and told them the results and without even questioning me they wrote me up for needing a new hard drive.

So then I dug up a spare computer, hooked it up, and went to restore all of my files, only to find that the backup was about 6 months old.

Fight witht he broken computer some more and get it to boot so that I can look at the backup routine, then go to the other server and recover the current (as of last night) backup of all the important files.

Not a very productive day, and I'm hoping that when the new drive comes in I can clone the old one onto it.

Weird hardware failures everywhere today...

This has been building for a while. Tuesday I came in to a BSoD, so I rebooted and it didn't come back. Wednesday I came in to another one, so I rebooted, and looked through the logs to find that the BOINC ClimatePrediction app crashed right before both lockups, so I upgraded BOINC and CP. Thursday I stayed home sick, and then today I worked out that it was really the drive. Monday I get a new drive (Maxtor instead of WD, but still 160GB SATA), and get to hope it the old one comes back up enough to ghost.

What have you been fighting with today?

We upgraded the memory in one of our old servers a few weeks ago and today I figure out that it's only really happy with one PC-133 256MB stick and one PC-100 128MB stick and not two 256s. I've got a laptop that's quite ill, but I think I can bring it back. Spent a long time working on VPN setup with a huge new client. Routers. Firewalls. License renewals. Just a lot of crap.
