Tonight I came home after work, and she was out running errands, so I went down into the garage to do some more work on the current crop of cutting boards. (I'm currently making 7, in a total of three different shapes/thicknesses). I was cutting biscuit slots in the oak divider layers freehand (holding onto the oak with one hand and the biscuit cutter with the other, not the brightest method, but there it is), and - you can tell where this is going, can't you? - the oak piece slipped, and I took a chunk out of my left thumb. So, I called her up and got her voice mail (right away, meaning she's either on the phone, or it's off), hung up, waited a bit, and called her back and left a message asking her to call me as soon as she can. Then I wrapped up my finger, and waited for the bleeding to stop and the shock to pass. A short while later she called back and I told her I needed to go to urgent care because I had sliced up my thumb. She came home, and off we went.

Get to Urgent Care, and there's a line. Being the observant type, I notice that the sign by the reception desk that says that if you're suffering from any of a list of things, including bleeding, you can skip reception and go right in. So I cut ahead of 3-4 people, and went in. Told them what I did, sat in chairs for a few minutes, and then get ushered into the Major Treatment room where they clean up my thumb and then grab a doc to look at it. He says they won't have to amputate it, and that he doesn't want to do stitches because they'd have to numb half my hand, so they taped it, wrapped it, gave me a handful of vicodin and sent me home.

Tomorrow I'm off to the dentist for a root canal.

Since [livejournal.com profile] misteropinion just called to see how hurt I was, it's not bad - I didn't even get stitches - just three steristrips, some bacitracin zinc, and two layers of gauze. I'm missing about 20% of my thumbnail and have a gash about half the depth of the tip of my thumb, but at an angle. The biscuit jointer (Ryobi's DBK50 detail biscuit joiner, which I don't think they even make anymore) has a ~1.5" dia 1/8" thick blade, so it takes a chunk out, but not that deep.
