[livejournal.com profile] teeka had her camera with her all day watching the chalk guy (his name is Seth), and took pictures throughout the day to illustrate the whole process.

All of the pics click through to 800x600 pixel images, and the 'full size' link gets you the original file.

Seth says he's thinking about setting up at Farmer's Market somewhere around the top of State Street, but it will depend on his work schedule tomorrow, and whether he can find a smooth section of cement to work on (he says the new pavement with the deep anti-slip grooves in it is too rough for what he does).

(full size)
He starts with a stencil that lets him get the proportions right and gives him a guideline for the rest of the work.

Then he starts drawing lines to block out the drawing and layout the colors.

Beginning the fill.

He starts with standard sidewalk chalk, and eventually layers and blends it with pastels.

Continuing the work.

More details to the face, stating to work the background in.

There's always a crowd watching.

The hair seems to be a lot of work, and involves many colors.

With the head mostly done, you can see the way the color develops as he does the body.

The first eleven pics are Teeka's, and only the last one (dscn7246_1.jpg) is mine.

We're not sure. He was going to try to be because this is the last farmer's market, but he usually doesn't get there very early (which we, as vendors do), but Warren, the mall vendor coordinator, says that if Seth shows ut, they'll find him space.

What time does it go till then? Would he still be there if I stop by at 6pm?

Farmer's Market runs until 2pm, but Seth (every time I've seen him work) usually takes until 4-5pm to finish. He might not be there at 6, but if he did a piece, it should still be there to see. There are also two of his works (yesterday's and Thursday's) in front of Memorial Library.
