I think its time for a new router - my current one is starting to spark and smell like something's burning.

Anybody got any recommendations on what to avoid?

I'd like variable speed, but I'm not sure if plunge or fixed base would work better for what I want to do.

Hee! I read the first sentence and thought about networking hardware. The third sentance was the confusing one. :-)

I'm thoroughly satisfied with mine, the 1/2" collet 11A Bosch plunge router.

I left the first sentence intentionally vague to see what replies I'd get.

I went to Menards last night and bought a 10A Skil 1820 (1/4" collet) plunge-base router, but am going to order the fixed base also since that'll work better (I think) for detail work with fancy bits.
