[livejournal.com profile] teeka and I have been discussing buying a pop-up camper. We decided to buy it, but only after we tried it, and after we got the truck transmission fixed.

Unfortunately, it looks like the transmission is going to eat the entire camper fund.

According to the transmission shop I just talked to, I need a "Soft Parts Overhaul" which they quoted me at $1650.

I'm calling a few other places to see what kind of prices I can get.

I called a few places, all but one of them immediately quoted me a price for what they said I needed.

The other one (A-1 Transmission on Nob Hill Rd) said "Drop it off tonight, we'll test drive it in the morning and see if we think it's a problem, or just a feature of your transmission" and if they thought there was a problem, they'd put it on the machine and test it out. I left early and dropped it off there and then biked back, meeting [livejournal.com profile] teeka as she was getting off the bus.

Hope you don't plan to use a pop-up camper in the middle of summer. They are death...plastic ovens. We used to have one for camping in Ft. Atkinson when I was a kid...almost everybody prefered the tent to waking up in the 110 degree camper.

Actually, we do plan to use it in the middle of summer. The biggest reason we were looking to get it is that we've gotten to the point where we have too much stuff to take with camping. Many our summer camping trips are really craft shows (see [livejournal.com profile] teeka's web site for details, and the camping gear and the booth stuff doesn't all fit in the truck any more.

The other reason we're looking at it is that we can sleep in it when the weather's bad enough to make a tent somewhat questionable.

We are, however, going to look it over before buying it as we want to make sure it'll support both of us and that the truck can tow it. If not, then plan B is to find a small (ie 4x6-ish) trailer to increase our cargo space and just tent it (we've already got ~5 tents).

Well, I can see the sensibility of the pop-up for bad weather, and i'm not saying that you SHOULDN'T buy one, just you'll roast if you want to sleep in good weather. If you tent it in good weather and trailer it in bad, you should be good. Just IMHO.
